At COP24 (the 24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties) of the Barcelona Convention<\/strong>, held in Cairo from 2 to 5 December<\/strong>, the countries reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the protection of the Mediterranean through an integrated approach that brings together land, sea, biodiversity, and coastal communities. The final document emphasizes the goal of protecting at least 30% of the Mediterranean by 2030 through the establishment of Marine Protected Areas<\/strong>, halting biodiversity loss via ecosystem-based planning, and tackling pollution, particularly from plastic, which currently suffocates habitats and marine species. However, Marine Protected Areas often remain \u201con paper,\u201d lacking resources, effective management, or sufficient scientific knowledge. For this reason, Marevivo has proposed the creation of a Mediterranean network of transboundary MPAs and ecological corridors, a concrete step toward viewing the Mediterranean as a single interconnected ecosystem, with monitoring nodes and protection measures grounded in science and international cooperation. The underlying message is clear: \u201cWe cannot protect what we do not know.\u201d Without data and knowledge, conservation cannot succeed. Marevivo took part in the Annual Institutional Dialogue for Mediterranean Nature Restoration Cooperation<\/strong>, organised by Interreg Euro-Med from 25 to 27 November in Barcelona<\/strong>, attending as an associated member of CoNISMa (National Inter-University Consortium for Marine Sciences). The event brought together institutions, scientific experts, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders engaged in the protection and restoration of Mediterranean ecosystems<\/strong>, providing a unique opportunity to share experiences, best practices, and joint projects at a transnational level. Marevivo followed the discussions with particular attention to projects related to Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), participating in sessions dedicated to marine and coastal restoration, environmental governance, and transboundary cooperation. In this context, the Foundation aimed to contribute both scientific and operational expertise, offering concrete tools to safeguard marine biodiversity and strengthen ecosystem resilience. On the occasion of COP30 on climate<\/strong>, held in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil<\/strong>, Marevivo issued a public appeal to reaffirm that the fight against the climate crisis must start from the sea. The oceans are the primary regulator of the climate system: they absorb nearly 90% of excess heat, capture up to one-third of human-induced CO\u2082 emissions generated from human activities, and produce more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere. This vital heritage is now showing alarming signs of distress, from accelerated warming and acidification to oxygen loss and destructive impacts on coastal ecosystems and the most vulnerable communities. Marevivo urges ambitious and measurable decisions: protecting at least 30% of the oceans by 2030, strengthening the conservation of marine forests and seagrass meadows, investing in global ocean-observation systems to understand the speed of ongoing changes, and tackling the three fronts of the environmental crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.<\/strong> Only by placing the ocean at the center of global climate policies will it be possible to ensure a truly effective and lasting ecological transition. From 9 to 13 June 2025, Nice hosted the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3)<\/strong>, bringing to the Mediterranean the voices of governments, scientists and environmental organisations to defend ocean health and strengthen global action for marine ecosystems. Marevivo took part to stress a key point:<\/strong> we can\u2019t protect marine biodiversity if we don\u2019t first invest in knowing it and cataloguing it. On the eve of the Conference, the Foundation had already presented in Genoa<\/strong> \u2014 at the close of the international campaign \u201cOnly One: One Planet, One Ocean, One Health\u201d<\/strong> aboard the Amerigo Vespucci<\/em> \u2014 a proposal for an International Agreement on Biodiversity<\/strong>, which was also illustrated in a hearing at the Italian Chamber of Deputies. During the Venice Climate Week (3\u20138 June 2025), Marevivo took part in the \u201cPlanet Aqua\u201d panel<\/strong> held at Ocean Space in Venice<\/strong>, dedicated to water as a global common good. The event, conceived by journalist Riccardo Luna<\/strong> in collaboration with the Future Food Institute<\/strong>, featured Jeremy Rifkin<\/strong>, Marevivo President Rosalba Giugni<\/strong>, Vice President Ferdinando Boero<\/strong>, CNR<\/strong> researcher Valerio Rossi Albertini<\/strong> and Dr Antonio Ragusa<\/strong>. The discussion focused on key ocean issues \u2014 climate change, acidification, overfishing and the threats posed by deep-sea mining<\/strong> \u2014 with a clear goal: bring the ocean back to the centre of the international political agenda<\/strong>. As Rosalba Giugni underlined, the challenge is to reconcile development and environmental protection<\/strong> by promoting a cultural shift grounded in scientific knowledge. During COP16 on biodiversity<\/strong>, held in Rome at FAO from 25 to 27 February 2025, Marevivo joined the Climate Pride network<\/strong>, taking part in the public performance in Piazzale Ugo La Malfa. The aim was clear: push for a more ambitious political and financial commitment<\/strong>, aligned with international targets for nature protection.<\/p>\n

On the eve of the Conference, the Foundation had already called on the Italian delegation to back scientific research on marine species<\/strong>, stressing that without knowledge there can be no protection<\/strong>. Marevivo took part in the second Italian edition of the Women Economic Forum, held at LUISS University in Rome<\/strong>, bringing the ocean perspective into global conversations on climate, equality and sustainability. Following its participation in the 56th Climate Reality Leadership Training<\/strong> held in Rome from 28 to 30 June 2024<\/strong>, Marevivo joined the network of the Climate Reality Project<\/strong>, the global non-profit founded by Al Gore<\/strong> (former U.S. Vice President and 2007 Nobel Peace Prize laureate). This step strengthens the Foundation\u2019s climate advocacy. The free event, open to citizens and professionals, delivered practical skills in climate science<\/strong>, clean-energy solutions<\/strong>and countering disinformation<\/strong>, with sessions in Italian and English and simultaneous interpretation. A full agenda of plenaries, workshops and networking covered adaptation<\/strong>, urban and agricultural resilience<\/strong>, the energy transition<\/strong>, and tools to expose greenwashing<\/strong>. According to the organisers, around 1,000 participants<\/strong> attended, mostly from Southern Europe<\/strong>. The goal was to expand the European network of Climate Reality Leaders<\/strong> and reinforce transnational cooperation<\/strong>on climate action. Over the three days, speakers highlighted the climate crisis\u2019 already visible impacts on the environment, the economy and public health<\/strong>. The purpose of the petition, signed in August 2023, is to call on EU national governments to put an end to bottom trawling, which is destroying our seafloors, undermining small-scale fisheries and worsening the climate crisis.<\/p>\n

Bottom trawling is one of the most damaging practices humans inflict on the ocean: it tears up seabed ecosystems, drives overfishing and kills indiscriminately \u2014 from turtles to rays to sharks. It also has a major climate impact. Dragging heavy nets along the seafloor burns more fuel and produces up to four times more emissions<\/strong> than other types of fishing. It disturbs carbon-storing sediments and uproots marine plants and animals that absorb carbon from the atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The ocean takes up about a quarter of all the CO\u2082 we emit, but bottom trawling is putting this vital service at risk. We have to protect the ocean so that it can go on protecting us.<\/p>\n

The Med Sea Alliance<\/strong> is a movement created in 2020 to bring together NGOs and networks working to improve the health and productivity of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the first time such a diverse group of organisations has come together behind a shared strategy to tackle overfishing and destructive fishing in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

Marevivo fully shares the Alliance\u2019s mission to call on policymakers to build a truly sustainable fisheries system in the Mediterranean. In September 2023, we joined the call to action \u201cEnd illegal bottom trawling in the Mediterranean\u201d<\/strong>launched by the Alliance.<\/p>\n

The summit ended in Turkey on 10 December 2021 after four intense days of negotiations. The 22 Parties discussed nineteen proposals for decisions on issues ranging from pollution, marine and coastal biodiversity, climate
\nchange and sustainable development. One of the most significant results brought home is the approval of the decision to designate the entire Mediterranean as an area with controlled

Through the actions of cleaning beaches and coasts we collect data on the most frequently found waste and put them in a global database that contributes to the creation of local policies, national and international waste management and the reduction or elimination of the most common and hazardous waste, such as single-use plastics. Europe and Middle East Region Cleanup Coordinator Symposium – In October 2019 we were in Oslo to prioritize and coordinate common actions to tackle ocean pollution. The International Coastal Cleanup coordinators currently represent 27 countries, islands and networks across Europe and the Middle East. To be effective, change must be implemented both at sea and on land.

\nThat at least 30% of the ocean is protected for most or all by 2030
\nThe transition to a low impact fishery
\nTo ensure a pollution-free ocean

\nleaders in the battle against global warming. The event was organized by Canadian Environment
\nand Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna.
\nMarevivo called for governments and international organizations to place the sea at the center of
\nconcrete and urgent actions, ensuring human and economic resources for the maintenance of
\ngood health of the seas. Among the proposals to mitigate the problem of plastic in the sea,
\nMarevivo presented its project to install waste collection systems directly at the mouth of the
\nrivers.<\/p>\n
