Projects to Protect the Mediterranean’s Corals
MedCoral Guardians is the Marevivo Foundation’s program that brings together projects aimed at protecting certain coral species in the Mediterranean.
LET'S PROTECT THE MEDITERRANEAN CORALS
Resilient to five mass extinctions, corals are among the oldest organisms on Earth. They provide habitat and refuge for many species, hosting about 25% of marine life. Additionally, they help reduce wave energy and coastal erosion. Although they may appear to be plants or rocks, corals are actually soft-bodied animals (known as polyps). However, their survival is now at risk, threatened by climate change and human activities. Over the past few decades, approximately 50% of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed or severely damaged, and the same is happening in the Mediterranean, home to precious and little-known corals. The loss of these delicate organisms will not cease unless urgent and effective actions are taken to protect them. In order to ensure their conservation, the Marevivo Foundation has launched ‘MedCoral Guardians,’ a project aimed at safeguarding Mediterranean corals, which seeks to raise awareness among citizens through educational and research activities targeting students and divers.

The projects
Discover how our work contributes to coral protection and biodiversity conservation
Research, Monitoring, and Outreach for the Future of Mediterranean Corals
The project proposals are identified in collaboration with research organizations and are tailored to the specific location where the species is found.
CONSERVATION STATUS STUDY
Data collection and identification of signs of stress and degradation.
CONTINUOUS MONITORING
It is carried out using advanced methodologies to detect and analyze the health of corals, allowing us to intervene in a targeted and timely manner.
ACTIVE PROTECTION
Direct actions to limit damage, promoting sustainable practices to halt degradation in the most vulnerable areas.
RESTORATION AND REHABILITATION
Interventions using innovative techniques, such as nurseries and transplants, to restore vitality to damaged sites.
EDUCATION
Educational projects aimed at the community, schools, and visitors, to spread greater awareness of the importance of coral reefs and, in general, the need to protect the sea.
INFORMATION
Awareness-raising actions for local communities on the ecological and economic benefits of protecting biodiversity, encouraging involvement and active participation through Citizen Science activities.
BEST PRACTICE
At the end of each project, in collaboration with research institutions, the data to be shared and the best practices to be implemented in other sites, with the necessary adjustments, are identified.
Every step counts, and your commitment can make a difference for the future of coral reefs and the health of our oceans.
