NAUTICINBLU
Italy and Europe
We bring sustainability into the classrooms of future maritime professionals.
Annually, 1,600 students at Nautical Institutes in Italy and Europe are involved.
Nauticinblu is a training program for students at Maritime Institutes aged 15–17, designed to deepen and strengthen their understanding of the complex relationship between economic growth, the ecological transition, and the preservation of natural balance. Now more than ever, it’s essential to invest in these young people’s potential as key advocates and drivers of change—because they will be the ocean professionals of tomorrow.

THE PROJECT
The educational pathway promotes understanding of the ocean and its resources, advances Ocean Literacy in schools, supports teachers in environmental education, and empowers the next generation to play an informed, active role in the ecological transition.
NAUTICINBLU IN EUROPE
Starting in 2023, Nauticinblu broadened its reach to European Maritime Institutes—now involving Portugal, Greece, and Spain—and opened the door to strong international cooperation among nations bound by seafaring traditions and ocean stewardship.
Environmental Education and Sustainability
The heart of the Nauticinblu programme is a four-day, full-immersion experience for students at Maritime Institutes, combining on-campus sessions on Ocean & Climate Literacy with hands-on outdoor activities. In the classroom, students meet experts—researchers, marine biologists and maritime professionals—for highly interactive lessons and practical labs on topics such as marine biodiversity, the energy transition, and the impacts of climate change on the ocean. During field trips, they board specialised vessels and visit Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Marine Animal Rescue Centres, museums, research aquariums and research institutes, engaging directly with professionals working in blue jobs. To support the learning pathway, tailored teaching materials are provided to extend classroom activities and consolidate knowledge.
Beach and coastal clean-ups with students
Students take the field for hands-on beach and coastline clean-ups, auditing and monitoring litter along selected stretches. These activities double as a learning moment to reflect on marine pollution, examine the types of waste abandoned, and build a strong sense of environmental responsibility. It’s practical work that strengthens students’ sense of belonging and their awareness of the role they play in safeguarding their local area. Where feasible, the school can also “adopt” the beach used for the activity, helping improve its condition over time and monitor any issues or threats.
Onboard Experiences
Throughout the programme, students visit vessels operated by the Italian Coast Guard, the Italian Navy and other agencies, including pollution-control craft, gaining first-hand field experience. During onboard visits they take part in hands-on workshops on safety, navigation, marine biodiversity and environmental monitoring. The activities are supported by lesson plans, worksheets and further reading to make the experience even more effective. It’s a concrete bridge between classroom learning and the maritime world of work.
Final Event
At the end of the Nauticinblu programme, the certificate ceremony takes place on board a ship—a setting that is both symbolic and deeply evocative. Students receive a certificate recognising their commitment and active participation in the programme’s activities, including hands-on experiences and workshops. This closing moment not only acknowledges the journey they’ve undertaken, but also strengthens their sense of belonging to the maritime community and their bond with the sea—the true protagonists of the entire experience.

NAUTICINBLU EUROPE
Nauticinblu Europe began as a pilot in Spain in 2022, then expanded to Portugal and Greece, and has since involved 913 students and over 70 teachers across 13 upper-secondary schools. The programme aims to deepen understanding of marine biodiversity and the interdependence between human actions and the health of the Global Ocean. Its goal is to help shape an “Ocean Generation” able to navigate the Blue Economy and green–blue jobs and to take an active role in the ecological transition. In all three countries, the project is delivered with Marevivo’s local partners—organisations that share the Foundation’s mission and commitment to protecting the sea.
