At the UNOC3 Conference in Nice, Marevivo sounded the alarm: we depend on the ocean — but we’re losing it.
Two thirds of the world’s seas lie outside any real system of environmental or economic governance. This creates a “Wild West” on the deep seafloor, which is increasingly exposed to unregulated extraction, especially deep-sea mining.
At the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, which Marevivo attended, countries failed to reach the critical number needed to ratify the International Treaty on High Seas Biodiversity — a step that is essential if we want to protect these waters beyond national jurisdiction.
