Our actions against underwater explorations for the research of oil and the exploitation of natural resources

THE TAR APPEAL FOR THE PO VALLEY CONCESSION IN RAVENNA

The Ministry of Economic Development has authorized the oil company Po Valley Operations to expand an existing title restricting the area previously granted-thus extending oil and gas exploration activities at sea within 12 miles of the coast, despite a 2010 law prohibiting such activities within these limits. The area in which the Australian company can drill increases – in defiance of regulatory constraints – from 197 square kilometers to 526 square kilometers. FAI, Greenpeace, Legambiente, Marevivo, Touring Club Italiano, and WWF have responded to this forcing by filing an appeal with the Lazio Regional Administrative Court against the Ministries of Economic Development, Environment, Infrastructure and Agriculture, and against the company PO Valley Operations PTY LTD, the Emilia Romagna Region, the Municipality of Ravenna and ISPRA, regarding the granting of a title for the exploration of oil and gas at sea in front of the coasts of the province of Ravenna.

THE NO DRILL PROTEST IN LANCIANO

The environmental emergency that has erupted in California, where Santa Barbara sees the specter of a new oil spill looming due to a pipeline leak, is yet more proof that we need to accelerate the transition to a fossil-free energy model.

This is why Marevivo has taken part in the “No Ombrina against all drilling” demonstration that will see on the streets of Lanciano, in the province of Chieti, a parade of all those who do not want Ombrina and drilling in our sea, but rather a model of development compatible with nature, such as the Costa dei Trabocchi National Park and the tourist and cultural enhancement of the Abruzzo region.

HANDS DOWN FROM THE SICILIAN SEA

Marevivo, Anci Sicilia, Superintendent of the Sea of the Sicilian Region, WWF, Greenpeace, Legambiente, Mareamico, Federalberghi Sicilia, ACI (Association of Italian Cooperatives Sicily Fisheries), SIB (Italian bathing union) joined in a presidium on Jan. 7 in front of the ARS to express the dissent of Sicilians against Governor Crocetta’s decision to authorize oil drilling in the sea of Sicily.

THE GULF OF TARANTO MUST BECOME AN AMP FOR CETACEAN CONSERVATION

After welcoming the anti-drilling amendment, the Marevivo and Univerde Foundation reiterated the importance of approving the text immediately without distorting it, paying attention to the constitutionality profiles so as not to offer footholds to oil multinationals for possible appeals. This choice is fundamental for the decarbonization of our country, thus moving away from dependence on fossil fuels, focusing on the transition to a sustainable economy based on renewables. We also call for starting as soon as possible with the procedure to make the Gulf of Taranto a marine protected area for the protection of cetaceans and for the establishment of the Otranto-Leuca MPA for coastal systems and white corals.
