With the Budget Act 2018, plastic cotton buds and, in general, all ear sticks made from environmentally unsustainable materials have also been banned from 2019.
Furthermore, the packaging should indicate how to dispose of them correctly, with an explicit invitation not to throw them down drains and toilets, as they are among the most common waste on our beaches.
Plastic Q-tips sticks account for 9% of the waste found on Italian beaches, an average of 60 per beach. What cannot be monitored is the damage to marine animals that ingest these plastics.
